2018 NFSC Dietetic Internship Workshop for Area Internships

February 2, 2018

NFSC Dietetic Internship (DI) sponsored a workshop for area interns. Attendees included interns from NIH, Johns Hopkins, University of Maryland Medical Center, University of Maryland Eastern Shore, US Army, Northern Virginia Tech in addition to the UMD dietetic interns. Forty-eight interns, preceptors and guests attended this session. UMD interns provided examples of their informatics training including a social media toolbox, clinical decision support algorithms, and a preview of the public health informatics project looking at flu incidence.

The agenda allowed area interns to learn about FDA’s new approaches to managing data, e.g. the Shakespeare project, ideas on how to develop a private writing practice, and the VA’s approach via telehealth to reach our veterans.  After lunch interns learned how to use improv comedy techniques to enhance effective communication. Then Kathleen Pellechia, with help from our UMD interns, explained various areas of nutrition informatics and provided an overview of informatics-based jobs for dietitians. Feedback to the day was gathered in the “wordle” below. Tweeting also occurred throughout the workshop; analytics demonstrated that several tweets achieved more than 300 impressions.
